Academic Services for Student Athletes
 

As stated on the Academic Services for Student Athletes website, the University of Central Florida makes a daily commitment to prepare its student-athletes to meet the challenges of their academic and athletic environment. As a part of the University's Office of Student Development and Evaluation Services, the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes works in collaboration with the Athletic Department to establish and achieve their personal academic, NCAA Division I academic-athletic eligibility, and career planning goals.
 

ASSA assists students in making a successful transition to University life by providing answers to questions as they arise, solutions for problems students might encounter, and an opportunity to meet faculty and staff at the University of Central Florida. These efforts and others culminate for the student with graduation, job placement or continued education.

The Writing Center
   
As stated on the University Writing Center website, the UWC provides free writing support to all undergraduates and graduates at the University of Central Florida. The center works with a variety of students including freshmen writing research papers, international students writing lab reports, and honors students writing theses. Students can also receive help with out-of-class writing such as scholarship and graduate school application essays.
     Trained Writing Center consultants work one-on-one with students. To work with a UWC consultant, it is recommended that a student make an appointment, either by using the Online Scheduler, stopping by MOD 608, or calling 407-823-2197. Bring any notes or drafts, a copy of the assignment (if any), and any relevant textbook or handbook.

The Math Lab
     
   As stated on the Math Lab website, the Math Lab, located in the Math and Physics Building room 113, is a walk-in tutoring facility offering free tutoring to students currently enrolled in certain mathematics courses offered by the UCF Department of Mathematics. These courses are Finite Mathematics, College Algebra, College Trigonometry, Mathematics for Calculus, Business Calculus, Applied Calculus, Calculus I, II and III, and Differential Equations. Tutors come from a wide spectrum of backgrounds including mathematics, engineering, education, chemistry, computer science, and statistics.         In the growing age of technology, the University of Central Florida strives to provide continuous computer support.  With the numerous computer labs on campus, there are many opportunities for students to use computers and printers.  At each computer lab there is a knowledgeable computer assistant to aid any student in computer problems or creating documents.  The locations and times of the operation are listed below:

Library
 
       The University of Central Florida Library is a valuable information center which houses books, journals, newspapers, microforms, and government publications.  The library is located directly across from Millican Hall and faces the Reflecting Pond.  The library contains over 1.5 million volumes, 300,000 government documents, 11,700 serial subscriptions, including 3,400 titles available electronically, 2.8 million microform units, and 37,000 media titles. Most of the services are located on the second and third floor, while the bulk of materials are located on the remaining floors of the five-floor building.

         When you enter the library, you are on the second floor.  It is on this floor that you can check out books at the Circulation Desk as well as get help from the Reference Desk.  The Reference Desk is equipped with staff who are knowledgeable about research and can help answer questions that a student might have.  The second floor also contains a computer lab and the Sprint Learning Lab where some classes may be held.

         Throughout the library there are computers for students to access the library’s online catalog and electronic databases.  Students off-campus may also access the library online catalog and electronic databases.

         Throughout the year, the library displays several different types of artwork on the second floor.  You can observe the artwork when you first enter the library.

Counseling Center
        As stated on the center’s website, the University of Central Florida Counseling Center is designated to provide psychological services to UCF enrolled students.  The Center is composed of a professional staff of psychologists and mental health counselors who provide a confidential and safe environment in which students can explore and resolve issues of concern.  The Center is open Monday through Friday and operates on an appointment basis.  Some of the services the Center offers include:

Conflict Resolution Services
 
       At times, students may need a third party to help calm conflict. The University of Central Florida has available the services of the Dispute Resolution Services Office. This office provides mediation services as well as a wide array of alternative forms of conflict resolution. The Dispute Resolution Services office is located on the main campus, in Student Resource Center 150, Orlando, Florida, 32816. Career Resource Center
 
       Many students are interested in finding jobs both during their college careers and when they are about to graduate.  Yet many students feel uncomfortable interviewing, creating a resume, and don’t know where to start looking for a job.  The Career Resource Center is there to help UCF students prepare for finding a job and aid in actually finding a job.  The Career Resource Center has three convenient locations:

The Career Resource Center provides many services for students including:
         -Choosing and confirming career choices through career assessment tools, appointments, workshops, and small groups.

        -Gaining career-related experience through internships.

        - Providing workshops and appointments to critique resumes, practice job interviewing, career dress, and critiquing cover letters.

         -Providing opportunities for employment through job fairs and the Gold Connection, which allows you to apply for many jobs in the community on one database.

Office of Multicultural Academic and Support Services
        The Office of Multicultural Academic and Support Services (in the Unit of Special Programs), as stated on the website, provides comprehensive and academic support, cultural enrichment, consultation, and referral services that promote the recruitment, admission, retention, and graduation of African American, Hispanic American, Asian American and Native American students. MASS also sponsors a six-week summer bridge program, Seizing Opportunities for Achievement and Retention (SOAR) Program participants by developingand implementing academic support services and programs which will promote and enhance student persistence and success through the university.

Student Academic Resource Center
        The University of Central Florida is dedicated to providing students with a quality education and services to help students.  The Student Academic Resource Center (SARC) provides students services to help them achieve their academic goals at the University.  Some of these services include:

        -Free individualized and small group tutoring in several subjects
       -CLAST tutoring, advising, and preparation

       -Computer preparation materials for the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT

       -Assistance with time management, note taking, test taking, memory, creative and critical thinking

        -Supplemental Instruction Program (SI)
       -Assistance in refining their skills to be successful at the university level

SARC’s hours of operation are:
 Sunday:  5pm - 10pm

 Monday-Thursday:  8am - 10pm

 Friday:  8am - 5pm

 During Finals Week: 24 hours a day

Student Health Services
 
       UCF recognizes that health and education play a vital role in the success of students.  Therefore, Student Health Services is dedicated to the treatment, education, and counseling of the student body.
        Every student is required to pay a health fee when they pay their tuition.  In return, any enrolled UCF students can visit the Student Health Center (SHC).  Physicians, advanced registered nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, and pharmacists staff the SHC.  Students can see a doctor when they are sick, for free.  Some services may have an additional cost such as having prescriptions filled; visiting the Women’s Clinic, Travel Clinic, Allergy Clinic; or having tests run in the lab. Most office visits require an appointment, so remember to call early.

 The Student Health Center also provides health testing for STDs and HIV at a small fee.  For these services please contact the SHC at (407) 823-4701.

 The Campus Wellness Center provides education and support for the health of the UCF student body.  Such services include:  a Registered Dietician, nutrition programs, stress management programs, and fitness consultants.

Services for Students With Disabilities

    The University of Central Florida strives to provide services for all students to aid them in achieving success.  Student Disability Services provides information and individualized services for a student’s documented disability.  Such services may include orientation to campus facilities and services, assistance with classroom accommodations, counseling, and referral to campus and community services for students with disabilities.  As always, student information is confidential and is used to assist the student. Parking Services
        Parking Services maintains campus parking and provides assistance to stranded motorists.  Such services include distributing parking decals, charging a dead battery, and retrieving keys from locked cars.

LINK
        As mentioned on the LINK (learning and Interacting with the New Knights) web page, it's a program designed to get New Knights out of their rooms to experience and interact with the UCF community. from academic orograms like New Student Convocation to community-building events like Homecoming, LINK is there. The main focus if LINK is to get New Knights out having fun, meeting people, and getting connected with UCF. Through LINK, New Knights will be exposed to experiences that will enhance their success and satisfaction at UCF.

Campus Safety Programs
        As stated on the department website, the UCF Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that provides police services to the University twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.  This department provides several services to maintain campus safety including:

Tutoring Services Offered by the College
        As stated in the Student Athlete Information Guide, many of the Colleges at the University of Central Florida offer tutoring services to better help students succeed at the university.  A list of the colleges and their services is listed below:

College of Education (Minority Teachers in Ed.)

         Provides tutoring services for CLAST, GRE, workshops, and teacher certification.

College of Arts and Sciences

         Provides tutoring through SARC in Foreign Language and Biology.

College of Business Administration

            Tutors are available through the help desk located BA 4th floor.

     Provides tutoring through SARC and Supplemental Instruction in Accounting and Economics.

College of Health and Public Affairs (COHPA)

         Provides tutoring through SARC in Micro-Biology and periodically in Nursing.

College of Engineering

         Mechanical Materials Dept. Lab (ENG368)

         The lab is open every day all day.  Usually doors are locked after dark.  Students may use the lab to work on computer assignments and other projects.  If a student needs entry access, go to room 381 for assistance.  For more information call Stephen Dick, 823-6666.
